Questions to ask a home care agency before you hire
Ask every agency the same questions and write down the answers. Rules for home care differ by state, so also check what your state requires.
Licensing and screening
- Is the agency licensed or registered where required in our state? Can I see the license?
- How are caregivers screened, including background checks and references?
- Are caregivers employees of the agency, or independent contractors? Who carries insurance and handles payroll taxes?
Training and supervision
- What training do caregivers receive, including for dementia care and safe lifting?
- Who supervises caregivers, and how often is there a check on the care plan?
- How do I reach someone after hours?
Matching and continuity
- Can we meet the caregiver before service starts?
- What happens if the caregiver is sick or does not arrive?
- Can we ask for a different caregiver if it is not a good fit?
Costs and contract
- What is the hourly rate, and are there minimum hours, nights, weekend or holiday differences?
- What is in the written care plan, and how can it change?
- How much notice is needed to end service, and are there fees?
Safety and trust
- How are complaints handled?
- How is the person's money and property protected?
- Will family get updates, and how?
Trust your observations
Pay attention to how clearly the agency answers, whether they listen to the senior and whether they put promises in writing. If anything feels rushed or vague, keep looking.
